David Young, WorkSource Business Services Consultant, explains WorkSource services to participants at the Learn, Return & Earn event held July 23, 2009 Florida’s unemployment rate for June 2009 hit a high of 10.6 percent. This is a 4.6 percentage point difference from the June 2008 rate. The state’s unemployment rate is also 1.1 percentage points higher than the national unemployment rate of 9.5 percent. “As we work to support the many workers impacted by the current economic situation, we take our responsibility to provide employment assistance and training very seriously” said Bruce Ferguson, CEO of WorkSource.

Daishia Taylor, 14 and Shayla Johnson, 17 look on as a supervisor teaches them an excel function This summer WorkSource invited young adults between the ages of 14-24 who met the United States Department of Labor eligibility requirements, to apply for participation in a summer work experience program. The WorkSource Summer Success program was funded by recovery funds under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Between the end of the school year and August 10, 2009, over 1,300 young people were placed throughout the six-county region. The youths received both education and hands-on work experience in a variety of projects, ranging from coaching and teaching young children to Computer Assisted Design (CAD), recycling to retail merchandising. Each county hosted at least one project, resulting in the following participation numbers.

Employers attend a job fair and meet candidates without ever leaving the office

WorkSource held a second Virtual Job Fair the week of July 13th – 17th. Like the first Virtual Job Fair held in April, the second was also a success. A total of 42 employers participated, posting over 1,000 jobs ranging from customer service manager and IT specialist to welder and forklift operator.

Florida’s Minimum Wage Increase

On July 24, 2009, the new Federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour replaced Florida’s previous rate of $7.21 per hour. Federal law requires employers to pay the higher minimum wage, whether federal or state. The minimum wage applies to all employees in the state who are covered by the federal minimum wage.

AWI Receives Grant to Help Unemployed Floridians Find Jobs

The U.S. Department of Labor has announced Florida as one of 25 states to receive a share of $26.5 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants for the Re-employment and Eligibility Assessment (REA) Initiative. Florida will receive $3,078,796 to provide unemployment compensation beneficiaries with additional assistance in finding jobs.
