Jacksonville attorney John “Jake” Schickel, was recently elected as Chairman of WorkSource (First Coast Workforce Development, Inc.). Schickel has served on the WorkSource board of directors since April, 2001. He was unanimously elected by the 33-member regional workforce development board, consisting primarily of private business owners.
Mr. Schickel’s professional associations include the Florida Bar, where he served as Chairman (1995-96 and 1996-97) and Vice-Chairman (1993-94) of the Board of Legal Specialization & Education; and on the Executive Council of the Trial Lawyers Section (1994-2000). He is on the Florida Bar Foundation’s Board of Directors. He is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, past President of the Jacksonville Defense Lawyers Association, Adjunct Professor at the Florida Coastal School of Law, and a member of the American Board of Trial Advocacy (ABOTA).
His civic activities include the Board of Directors for the Jacksonville Electric Authority (1994 -2002) where he has served as Chairman (1995-97). Some of his other civic commitments include Vice-President of the Alliance for World Class Education (2000 and 2001), past president of the Jacksonville Sertoma Club, past president of the Alumni Commission of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (1995-1998), and a member of the University of Florida Law School Trustees. Additionally, he has served on the North Florida Council of Boy Scouts of America’s Board of Governors (1996-1998) and on the Search Committee for Duval County Schools Superintendent. As a member of the Chamber of Commerce, he was on the Board of Governors (1997-present), on the Executive Committee (1997-2001), Business Recruiter Chairman (1997), Chairman of the Education & Work Force Development (2000 and 2001), on the Strategic Task Force (1999), and a Champion of World Class Education.
A native of Jacksonville, Mr. Schickel attended the University of Florida where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1970 and his Juris Doctor in 1972. He is in the University of Florida’s Hall of Fame and the Who’s Who of American Universities & Colleges.
He was selected Jacksonville’s Lawyer of the Year for 2002.
