It is estimated that there are over 250 million people living in rural Africa who lack access to safe and reliable drinking water (“potable water”).  With pumped water generally confined to major cities, rural residents often resort to fetching their drinking water from open wells, streams and other water sources that can be easily contaminated, resulting in widespread illness and disease.

EWW small-scale irrigation projects promote a foot-powered water pump – the “Bielenberg treadle pump” -- as an affordable way for farmers to more efficiently irrigate their land, thereby greatly increasing their productivity and income.  The above chart depicts the increased annual income from treadle pump usage by country program.  For more information on EWW’s small-scale irrigation projects, please click here.

Over 36,000 “Gyapa” improved charcoal stoves have been sold by EWW-assisted enterprises in Ghana since November 2002!

Van Dusen Named Interim President and CEO
EWW recently named Ann Van Dusen as Interim President and CEO. Van Dusen, a former senior executive for Save the Children and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), will lead EWW until a permanent President and CEO is selected by the Board of Trustees.

Ford Foundation Supports Natural Products Study
EWW recently received a $90,000 grant from the Ford Foundation to undertake a targeted study of the natural products subsector in Southern Africa. The seven-week study will assess the potential for developing natural products-based enterprises in Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
