Local Tax Assistance Program is Back!
Tax season is almost here; words that strike fear into many hearts. To the members of the Campaign for Working Families; a coalition of local entities including the One-Stop Career System, it is time to kick into high gear as they prepare to open and operate six Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites located throughout Volusia and Flagler counties.
VITA sites offer free tax preparation for low to moderate-income individuals and families. Many of these people may qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC); these tax credits can amount to a substantial income boost, up to thousands of dollars, for workers who qualify. In 2004, the Campaign for Working Families was instrumental in bringing over $600,000 into the community through tax refunds. However unless people are aware of these tax credits and how to claim them they risk missing an earned benefit that may help them to keep working and caring for their families.
Outreach activities that inform eligible workers about tax credits, motivate them to file their tax returns and connect them to free tax filing assistance are critical. Community organizations, social service providers, and businesses can all play an important role in getting the information out to eligible workers. If you would like informational materials about EITC, CTC and/or the Campaign for Working Families please contact the One-Stop’s Workforce Community Liaison, Linda Callaghan, at 386-740-3266.
