Message from the President
by Debbie Hurst

The WBCS exists to facilitate mutually beneficial procurement opportunities between certified women owned businesses, corporations and government entities. We are all about growth and productivity for our members. To that end, I am very pleased to report that we have brought on eight new corporate members this year bringing our total to 52 Sustaining Members. These new members include Baker Hughes, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Express Personnel Services, H. E. Butt Grocery Company, Merrill Lynch, Priester Supply, UBS Paine Webber, and Wyndham International. As you meet representatives of these companies at events please help me welcome them and applaud their commitment to the utilization of women-owned businesses.

I am also very excited to announce that WBCS will be entering into an agreement with the Texas Building & Procurement Commission whereby we will screen our certification applicants for HUB (Historically Underutilized Business) certification in addition to our WBE certification. This is a giant step forward in streamlining the certification process for women business owners. WBEs interested in doing business with the State of Texas will now be able to apply for the required HUB certification through the WBCS at no additional cost along with the national WBE certification that we already provide. This service should be underway by the 4th quarter of 2003, so look for more information to come!

With the input, counsel, and expertise of our WBE and Sustaining members, WBCS creates numerous opportunities for relationship building, business growth, and success. Take maximum advantage of your membership by attending the events and networking opportunities that are created for you. It’s not too early to get these three events on your calendar.

For networking and strengthening corporate and WBE relationships – be at the WBCS Annual Meeting and TOP TEN Networking Reception on November 18, 2003.

For financial and marketing instruction from the highly acclaimed professors of the University of Texas McCombs School of Business – attend the UT Executive Education Seminar held February 19-21, 2004 at Texas Instruments.

For access to buyers and corporate procurement opportunities – be at the Women’s Business Round-Up Trade Fair at the Arlington Convention Center April 14-15, 2004.

These premier events address the heart of the Council’s mission – access and growth for women owned businesses.
