I recently had the pleasure to attend my first WBCS Regional Outreach Event. Debbie Hurst, Emilia Menthe, Barbara Taylor and I went to Austin on July 24th. Our first meeting was with several certified WBEs who had expressed an interest in forming a steering committee for the Austin area. That was followed by an open meeting for prospective members where we discussed many issues facing WBEs and what the Council can provide. The event was sponsored by Merrill Lynch, Guaranty Bank & LCRA and attended by 40 people. The enthusiasm of both the WBEs and the Sustaining Members was a wonderful experience. It was time well spent for all of us.

The main message I always try to emphasize whenever I speak for the Council is to take advantage and get involved. Take advantage of the events and programs the Council offers. Whether it is a major event like Harvesting Partnerships on September 4th, or our Table Topics Luncheon series – the cost is nominal and the programs are always on subjects that affect our businesses.

Most of all get involved! Join a committee! We have ongoing committees that have varied time commitments, as well as, shorter term committees for our main events. Each committee typically has a Sustaining Member and WBE co-chair. Serving with these groups gives you the opportunity to develop new business relationships and friendships. If you need even more encouragement to get involved, read the Done Deals issues and you’ll see that there are often many deals reported that are a result of the networking that goes on at our events and committee meetings.

Don't forget - if you have any questions or comments about the Council - please contact me at ambassador@wbcsouthwest.org. I am here to help you!
