Message from the Executive Director
Off to a Productive Start
by Debbie Hurst

2002 is shaping up to be an incredibly productive year for the Women’s Business Council – Southwest. Just two months into the year, we have welcomed three new Sustaining Members - Army & Air Force Exchange Service, Fort Worth Transportation Authority, and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.; have completed our premier educational seminar – The University of Texas Executive Education Program; have held our first outreach/networking meeting in Arkansas with others to follow in New Mexico and Oklahoma; and have rolled out several new initiatives specifically designed to bring assistance and greater value to our Sustaining Members. And we took time out to celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of our members at the annual Awards Gala held January 22nd!

Programs for members have never been more vital, and committee involvement from our WBE and Sustaining members has reached record numbers. The increased involvement speaks to the value the Council brings to your business development and corporate WBE initiatives. One of our major objectives this year is to provide education and resources that assist our Sustaining Members in their WBE utilization and diversity program growth. To that end, we are offering a workshop at Round-Up for corporate and government representatives entitled “Futurizing Your Supplier Diversity Program” where participants can learn and share the best practices and “next” practices that will propel their programs forward.

Expanding our network throughout our four-state region is another major goal in 2002 and we’ve gotten off to a great start in Arkansas where our February 27th networking meeting brought together women business owners, corporations, and government entities interested in utilizing the WBCS certification and business development programs.

Upcoming educational seminars will address technology, strategic alliances, and “unlocking the gate” to corporate procurement. We are excited about hearing from Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman at our March TOP TEN Meeting about the Joint Strike Fighter project and related opportunities for WBEs. The Round-Up Trade Fair is a must-attend procurement opportunity coming up in April, and the Done Deals monthly announcement of business being done between members is expected to see a 100% increase in deals reported in 2002. So don’t let any more time pass without taking advantage of the opportunities available to you as members.
