Art therapist Ruth Ann Traylor knew providing homeless families with shelter and three meals a day simply wasn't enough. That's why a year and a half ago, she approached HomeFront Executive Director Connie Mercer about starting an art program at the non-profit's Family Preservation Center in Trenton.

On April 19, 2007, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Camden honored Jack Callahan, of Cherry Hill with the Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio Award for Leadership. The award cites his outstanding Christian leadership and a lifetime of volunteer work and service to charitable organizations. "Jack epitomizes Christian leadership," says Kevin Hickey, Executive Director of Catholic Charities. "His lifelong passion for justice, service to Church and community, and commitment to the sacredness of all life makes him a model for us all."

New Jersey Selected to Test Summer of Service for Youth
Federal Government Asks New Jersey to Test Nationwide Initiative on Volunteerism

New Jersey’s AmeriCorps and VISTA programs were selected to pilot a Summer of Service in 2007 to engage young people in community service and other enrichment activities. The Corporation for National and Community Service asked New Jersey to test the concept of Neighborhood Youth Service Clubs as part of an exploration of a nation-wide Summer of Service in 2008. Programs were quickly developed in partnership with key agencies in Newark, Camden, and Trenton, and during the summer over 300 young people, ages 8 to 14, were involved.

AmeriCorps and You
 AmeriCorps is the National Service Program that provides Americans of all ages and backgrounds with an opportunity to earn education awards in exchange for community service. The AmeriCorps commitment is a one- or two-year obligation in which members help meet the nation’s critical needs in areas of public safety, education, human needs, and the environment.
Through more than 600 sponsors, AmeriCorps unites diverse Americans through the pledge "Getting Things Done." Over 100,000 AmeriCorps members have served their communities since 1994. Currently more than 500 members serve in New Jersey communities.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Volunteer NJ eNewsletter is to support the strategic goals of the Governor’s Office of Volunteerism: to provide centralized information and technology systems to increase statewide capacity to effectively recruit, place and utilize volunteers; support the needs of nonprofit organizations and their managers of volunteers to improve management and professional skills; and to recognize the achievements of New Jersey’s volunteers.
This Mission Statement is based upon the Strategic Plan of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Volunteerism and Community Service. The Volunteer NJ eNewsletter is a partnership of the Governor’s Advisory Council and the New Jersey Commission on National and Community Service.
