President’s Letter

Welcome back after the recent Holidays!  I hope everyone had an enjoyable Holiday season and is excited and motivated as we start 2012! 

Our annual tax seminars with Steve Tillinger and Blaise Bender were very well attended and received high reviews.  We have booked both seminars again for next year, so mark your calendars now.  Again, Steve Tillinger will be a one day Federal Tax Update on October 19, 2012 and Blaise Bender will have the usual two day seminar on December 6 and 7, 2012.

The annual election of officers for the Victoria Chapter was held at the December seminar.  Those elected for a one year term commencing June 1, 2012 include:
Christopher Janecek President
Brenda Roth  President-Elect
Diane Kliem President-Elect Nominee 
Billy Nguyen Treasurer

Elected for three year terms effective June 1, 2012 are:
Michael Wenske  Chapter Elected Director
Lynn Miori Chapter Elected Director and Past President

Elected by the TSCPA Society for a three year term:
Jerome Kotzur Director-at-Large


Our January luncheon meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at the Victoria Country Club. Will Kleck with Unique HR will present the program.  See information and registration form below.

We have also included information in this newsletter about our March Charity/Guest night.  Brenda Roth is chairing this event and has a fun evening planned. 

Our Chapter will again sponsor a team for the Relay for Life scheduled for the last weekend in April.  Tina Wleczyk is chairing this event and needs everyone to participate in some way to make this a success. See details in this newsletter.

LUNCHEON MEETING AND PROGRAM
Tuesday, January 24, 2012

At our meeting, Will Kleck from Unique HR will be giving a presentation on what a PEO (Professional Employer Organization) is and how they function.  He will discuss who uses PEO's and why.   He will talk of their development in the last twenty years and how they are different than staff or temporary employee leasing.  As accountants, you need to know more about the fiduciary responsibilities and other assumed liabilities of PEO's.  Lastly, he will give a brief BIO and report on 30 years of service to Lack's Stores Inc. as their HR Director and what he is doing now in the Victoria area working for a PEO called Unique HR which is based out of Corpus Christi.

American Cancer Society - Relay For Life®
April 27th

Our chapter is sponsoring a team in the Relay for Life event in the fight against Cancer that will be held at:

Coleto Creek Reservoir
April 27, 2012
6 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning

Relay for Life is a 12 hour event where team members raise funds, and commit to walking during a 1 hour time slot. There is live entertainment all night long, food vendors, games, sales vendors, and an atmosphere that is out of this world and is sure to touch your heart. Luminaria bags are for sale, $10 each, in honor of a friend or loved one who has battled cancer.

Job Description:
Business Advisor. (Full Time) The University of Houston-Victoria is seeking a Business Advisor for its Small Business Development Center. This position is responsible for providing confidential counseling, business training, and information to business owners in the Victoria region by using a collaborative business consulting approach. A Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or business related field is required. Experience working in and for a small business is taken into account, with a minimum of two (2) years’ experience required. Public speaking and training experience, along with basic financial analysis experience is required.

The ability to travel within our eleven (11) county regions and meet with various business groups and individuals will be necessary. The individual must have an excellent work ethic and be able to demonstrate the ability to manage his or her time, be self-motivated, and attain annual goals. The successful candidate must be able to understand and be able to review financial statements, evaluate competitors, and analyzing business practices. The successful candidate will also be required to complete the Certified Business Advisor program as an integral part of his or her professional development. The minimum salary for this position will be $34,000 and is eligible for benefits.
