View from the top….
If “timing is everything”, why would I go to Israel now?
by Ralph Robbins
At least, that’s what everyone keeps asking me. I’m going to Israel along with a dedicated delegation from Virginia to meet with potential VITAL candidates. (We’ll be in Israel from Aug 13 – 21). But that doesn’t really answer the question of “why now?” After all, practically nobody else is going now.
And that’s exactly the point! Our program (VITAL = Virginia Israel Tech Alliance) is seeking the best young, post startup Israeli companies that want to expand to the US. And luckily for us, very few others are racing off to Israeli right now. We’ll be talking to Israeli companies as part of the decision process for inclusion in the October 16-17 VITAL Conference to be held in Blacksburg and Roanoke, Virginia.
If you would like to meet with the Virginia delegation while we’re in Israel, please write to: sela@VitalVa.com

by Fred Diamond
LUNA Technologies, Inc. is one of the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center’s (VTCRC) success stories. It completed a $10M "A" round of funding, led by Columbia Capital of Alexandria, Virginia, in December 2000 and is looking to complete a “B” round later this fall. The 30-person company manufactures optical test instruments incorporating new and revolutionary photonics technology based on interferometric measurement research done at NASA by Luna Technologies' CTO, Dr. Mark Froggatt.

Focus On: Globecom Interactive
Software Company Helps Customers “Repurpose without Reprogramming”
by Fred Diamond
Globecom Interactive is doing what most young companies aren't doing...it's making money after a year in the market. It's a simple formula: in-store tests have proven their new generation of software saves programming time, saves money and increases sales of consumer products. The result: from the beginning, Globecom went after blue chip customers.
Home Depot, General Electric, 3M, and Honeywell all use the company’s family of software products and services to manage and update their customer communications vehicles. According to Tamir Melamed, CEO of Globecom, "our software lets companies save money and time by 'repurposing without reprogramming'.” In other words, from a single production cycle, all interactive demos, web sites, training manuals, and in-store point-of-sale merchandising kiosks utilize the same information repurposed to meet the different presentation requirements. It’s an approach that saves companies up to 90 percent and helps them become much more efficient.
