USLAW Member Spotlight

In each edition of USLAW NETWORK NEWS, we will focus on three firms that are members of the organization. We hope that these “spotlights” will give you a little better understanding of the types of firms that make up our network.

Chicago, Illinois: O’Hagan, Smith & Amundsen, L.L.C.

O'Hagan, Smith & Amundsen is one of Chicago's largest law firms. Attorneys combine litigation expertise with a practical business approach to offer client-centered services in an efficient and insightful manner. The firm is based in Chicago with six additional offices in northeastern Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Attorneys have served as National Counsel and Regional Counsel for a variety of clients, providing both administrative oversight, as well as practical assistance at local levels. General areas of practice include appellate, commercial, commercial transportation, complex litigation, construction, corporate transactions, employment, extra-contractual/insurance litigation, health care, insurance coverage, product liability, professional liability, property litigation, retail, toxic, environmental & mass torts, and workers' compensation.

In addition to a strong commitment to firm clients, OSA attorneys also take pride in their community service and charitable involvement. Attorneys use their skills and capabilities to make a difference in their respective communities and beyond by taking part in organizations such as Make-A-Wish, the Salvation Army and CARPLS, which provides legal aide to low-income Chicago residents. On a larger scale, OSA is involved in a charity called "Computers for Change," which involves sponsoring a school in a remote area of Belize that is currently functioning without technology. Computer access connects these children with the rest of the world. Good used laptops will help children and teachers in this area make rapid progress. Under the direction of Larry Smith, firm attorneys have donated time, money and resources to ensure the success of this program. The firm's IS Director, Chuck Linebaugh, will be traveling to Belize next month to set up the mission's wireless network as well as to install the used computers that OSA will donate.

St. Paul, Minnesota: Larson King, L.L.P.

Larson King is our Minnesota firm. Although Larson King was formed just five years ago, it has amassed an impressive list of achievements and litigation successes. The firm is a litigation boutique that handles product liability, employment, class actions, mass torts, insurance coverage, reinsurance, construction, professional liability and personal injury matters. Larson King is national coordinating counsel in product liability and insurance coverage matters. As a result, the firm regularly associates and works with lawyers from across the country. Larson King is unique in that, in addition to its liability and coverage work for numerous insurance companies, it also handles substantial insurance claims on behalf of policyholders. Recently, the firm was honored in the Corporate Counsel publication as a "go to" firm for both litigation and employment in a survey of General Counsel for Fortune 250 companies.

Kathy Mahoney is the Office Managing Partner of Larson King. Kathy represents employers in all aspects of employee management issues. Kathy is actively involved in state and federal court litigation, including successfully representing the State of Minnesota before the United States Supreme Court. Kathy works with other members of the firm in coordinating employment work across the country. Kathy recently led a team of lawyers in persuading a State Supreme Court to affirm the trial court's denial of a class certification in a plant closing case. Beyond her busy legal practice, Kathy is a committed contributor in the local community. Kathy was appointed by the Minnesota Supreme Court to the Minnesota Board of Law Examiners, is President of the Girl Scout Council of St. Croix Valley and regularly advises the nationally acclaimed Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. Kathy has two daughters, 18 and 21, both of whom are students at the University of St. Thomas.
