Leaders of some of the world’s top companies formed a unique coalition to take the fight against theft of intellectual property to the highest international level.  Meeting under the banner of BASCAP (Business Action to Stop Counterfeiting and Piracy), they said theft of intellectual property rights threatens the basis of the 21st-century economy.

Business a Key Player in UN Chemicals Management Talks

At United Nations negotiations last month in Vienna, USCIB members worked through the International Chamber of Commerce to support a risk-based approach to chemicals management.  Following up on the UN’s 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development, the UN Environment Program has organized several meetings to identify a “Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management.”

UN Information Society Summit Preparations in Disarray

A preparatory meeting last month in Geneva that was supposed to pave the way toward several broad agreements at November’s World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) instead ended in disarray, with no consensus on the way forward on Internet governance and other important issues affecting e-commerce and the global Internet system.

Business Applauds OECD’s China Survey

China could overtake the U.S. and Germany to become the world’s largest exporter in the next five years, according to a survey conducted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.  The rollout of this OECD first-ever economic survey of China, compiled in collaboration with numerous Chinese agencies and statistical experts, was unveiled at a recent USCIB meeting in New York.

Senate Unanimously Ratifies Key Customs Convention

Tourtellotte, courtesy U.S. Customs & Border Protection) By a vote of 87-0, the U.S. Senate on September 26 ratified the Revised Kyoto Convention on Harmonized Customs Procedures, greatly boosting the chances for the convention to take effect by the end of this year or shortly thereafter.
