Business Applauds CAFTA’s Passage

President George W. Bush acknowledges the applause of legislators and administration officials Tuesday, Aug. 2. 2005 in the East room of the White House, as he signs the CAFTA Implementation Act. (White House photo by Paul Morse) The business community applauded adoption of the Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement. Also, condolences came in from USCIB's global business network in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Robinson’s Visit Kicks Off China Activities
USCIB President Peter M. Robinson speaking in Tianjin An especially active autumn for our work on China got off to an early start when USCIB President Peter M. Robinson visited the country in August. Speaking at the China Enterprise Confederation’s “Top 500 Companies” conference in Tianjin, he called for greater transparency in rule-making and better enforcement of intellectual property rights.

Chile Joins ATA Carnet System for Temporary Exports
Chile will become the first Latin American country to accept ATA Carnets for duty-free, tax-free temporary exports, beginning October 1. It is the culmination of several years’ work by USCIB and the International Chamber of Commerce to extend the system to the region.

Progress Reported in Preparations for Avian Flu Pandemic
Since our story earlier this year on growing concern over lack of preparedness for a possible global pandemic, there have been a number of important developments, reports Daniel A. Sharp, president of the Royal Institution World Science Assembly (RiSci), who briefed USCIB’s board on avian flu and threats in April.

Disappoinment at Lack of Progress on Doha Round

New WTO Director General Pascal Lamy As Pascal Lamy took up the reins as director general of the World Trade Organization, business expressed concern with the lack of progress on the Doha Round. Also, USCIB members mourned the untimely death of a senior Commerce Department official.

Industry Cheers Appointment of U.S. Anti-Piracy Coordinator

USCIB applauded President Bush’s appointment in July of Christian Israel as the Commerce Department’s top intellectual property watchdog, and it is gearing up for the second global congress on counterfeiting and piracy.
