A Business Grows in Ulster
by Chester J. Straub, Jr.

City of Kingston

Ulster County has long been known for its cultural vitality and support for the arts. Over recent years, the Art Society of Kingston (ASK) has been a major force in maintaining that tradition.

Founded in 1995 as a membership organization comprised of artists, art enthusiasts and supporters, ASK now boasts over 500 members. It is a sponsor of numerous activities, including the citywide Sculpture Biennial, annual Soap Box Derby, and First Saturdays, a coordinated gallery opening on the first Saturday of each month for all art venues in Kingston. These all contribute to the cultural diversity of Kingston and enrich the quality of life of our community.

ASK now is in the process of a major renovation of an early 1900’s building in Kingston’s Rondout community. When the renovation is complete, the building will be ASK’s headquarters and include two galleries, a state-of-the-art theatre for multimedia and live performances, a recording studio, a research library, and classroom and meeting space.

To learn more about ASK visit www.askforarts.org or call 845-338-0331.

Town of Lloyd

Since 1983, the Se’Lux Corporation has made its home in the Town of Lloyd. It offers a comprehensive range of high quality luminaries and innovative fixtures designed to help architects and lights professionals throughout North America create exceptional interior and exterior spaces to live and work.

While a subsidiary of Berlin based Semperlux AG, Se’Lux is an independent profit center with local management that allows it to focus on the unique demands of North American markets. And as a result of its dedication to promoting environmentally friendly lighting solutions, Se’Lux has become a leader in “Dark-Sky Friendly” fixtures that help to decrease light pollution and energy consumption.

Begun with only eight employees, Se’Lux now employees approximately 100. In addition, it has now twice expanded its facilities to include state-of-the-art fabrication and assembly facilities and innovative interior and exterior showrooms.
