For the past two years, State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz School of Business students have competed in the School’s Business Plan Contest. The contest included teams of students, coached by a faculty advisor, testing their knowledge in real world business settings by researching and developing an idea and turning it into a practical profitable business plan.
The contest combines the excitement of competition with the reward of serious learning. Students who participate reap the rewards of stronger skills and increased confidence in their abilities, along with college credit and chance at a scholarship.
This year, the School of Business wants to generate increased community involvement in the contest.
They are asking for ideas for new projects that students can turn into solid and implementable business plans. The School hopes that the local business community will also be available to advise students, providing the students not only the opportunity to work as a team but also to gain practical, real work experience.
In addition to seeking possible project ideas for the students, the School of Business is also soliciting contest sponsors. The sponsors’ support will help to build a scholarship fund for student participants and cover contest expenses.
The Business Plan Contest is a win-win for the students and businesses alike. Students test their knowledge in the real world, and businesses benefit from their services and fresh ideas. Equally important, participating businesses have the satisfaction of helping mold the next generation of executives and business leaders.
