A Business Grows in Ulster

Town of Gardiner

Durable Systems, Inc. was welcomed to Ulster County this past fall.  With a $75,000 loan facilitated through the Ulster County Development Corporation Durable Systems has established an innovative manufacturing facility in the Gardiner Industrial Park.

The loan from the Ulster County Revolving Loan Fund will be utilized to purchase machinery and equipment and create eleven (11) new jobs in Durable Systems’ first year of operations and a total of thirty-two (32) jobs within three years.  Total project investments by Durable Systems will be $415,000.

Durable Systems will manufacture and market worldwide their hot surface igniters utilizing the patented technology of Curt Colopy, a principal of the new company.  A hot surface igniter is a device that ignites the burner in gas furnaces, stoves, and clothes dryers and is considered the safest form of ignition.  The new Durable Systems’ design is considered more dependable and economical than those current available, and is intended to meet the demand of the Original Equipment Market (OEM), distributors, and aftermarket sales marketplace.   Annual sales for new igniters are projected to exceed  $49 million.

City of Kingston

With $5,356,931 in financing facilitated through the Ulster County Industrial Development Agency (UCIDA) the First Columbia Benedictine Group LLC, has begun construction of a new comprehensive cancer center for Benedictine Hospital at the hospital’s Mary’s Avenue campus in Kingston, New York.

Benedictine Hospital has selected the First Columbia Benedictine Group to design and build a new two-story 26,000 square foot medical center to include a 14,000 square foot Regional Outpatient Radiation Cancer Treatment Center, which will provide advanced cancer care delivery diagnostic and radiation services and support services.  Of significant benefit will be the center’s Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), a technologically advanced, computerized tumor treatment plan.  The new center will create thirty-two full time jobs.

Health care is one of the fastest growing job sectors in Ulster County and nationally, and is one of the most critical factors in creating a quality community.  By combining a higher quality of life with growing economic base Benedictine Hospital and First Columbia Benedictine Group LLC are helping to create a brighter future for Ulster County.

First Columbia Benedictine Group LLC is affiliated with First Columbia LLC, which is based in Latham, New York.  First Columbia LLC is a foremost real estate developer with commercial and medical projects throughout the Hudson Valley and Capital District. Recent projects include the Mid-Hudson Family Health Center in New Paltz, the New York International Plaza and the future Hudson Valley World Trade Center at Stewart Airport.

Benedictine Hospital, located in the City of Kingston, is considered to be one of the most advanced medical centers in the region and is designated as a “Community Cancer Hospital”, a recognition by the American College of Surgeons for a higher level of integrated care, multiple specialties, and team approach.

The Ulster County Development Corporation in late December announced that Sumerano Variety, Inc., received a $65,000 loan from the Ulster County Revolving Loan Fund.

The UCDC loan is part of a total investment of $355,000 by Cataldo (Dino) and Cindy Sumerano to establish a second Ben Franklin Store in the Kingston Plaza.  The funds will be used to acquire inventory, new fixtures for the renovated store space, modern sales equipment, a computerized picture framing center, and working capital.

The Sumerano’s have operated the Ben Franklin Store in Saugerties for five years providing retail arts and crafts supplies.  The new store in the Kingston Plaza will offer similar items and be approximately 4,800 square feet and located in space formerly occupied by Walgreen’s.  The addition of the second Ben Franklin Store will expand Sumerano Variety’s total employment by ten (10) new full time jobs, for a total of sixteen  (16) positions.

Town of New Paltz

In December 2003, the Ulster County Industrial Development Agency finalized the financing of a major expansion of the historic Mohonk Mountain House.

The $13.5 million expansion will create a new therapeutic spa and heath club facility.  The expansion will be housed in a 37,000 square foot addition and include the spa, weight and cardio equipment, an Olympic-sized pool, and massage therapy facilities.

Every year some 4,200 new or returning guests get-a-way to the historic Mohonk Mountain House for a conference, a family-style holiday, or just for a day of tennis, hiking, or afternoon tea on the veranda.  This is exactly what twin brothers Alfred and Albert Smiley envisioned when they visited Lake Mohonk in the Shawangunk Mountains in 1869. A place where people could be close to nature – yet be far from the crowds on 2,200 wooded acres.

Mohonk’s picturesque architecture is like entering a place where old walls and wide halls whisper of history and romance. Yet, over recent years there has been a new luster added.  A full array of outdoor activities, theme celebrations, an open air ice skating rink, luxury rooms, therapeutic spa services, and internet-services have been added to Mohonk Mountain House’s offering to satisfy the desire of today’s modern travelers.

The 25l-room Victorian landmark sits chiseled into the Shawangunk Ridge near New Paltz and is considered to be the grand dame of resorts.  Members of the Smiley family continue to own and operate the facility with a goal of preserving the feeling that some things never really change.

The Ulster County Development Corporation (UCDC) approved a $55,000 loan to Masseo Landscape, Inc.  The loan from the Ulster County Revolving Loan Fund will be utilized to purchase property and a building to be Masseo Landscape’s headquarters and shop facility and expand upon its current six (6) full time positions by adding an additional four (4) positions. Total project investments by Masseo Landscape will be $165,000.

Mark Masseo founded Masseo Landscape while still at SUNY New Paltz earning a degree in horticulture.  Since then this local, homegrown business has expanded to meet an ever increasing and diverse demand for commercial and residential horticultural services throughout central Ulster County.  With the establishment of a permanent headquarters and showroom Masseo Landscape will no be able offer its my clients the specialized services they demand.
