I wake up to the sounds of city sirens. London. - My mind remembers how it once was, back in Africa. The early morning sun slanting warmly in through my window. At night, the garden toads croaking softly to the conversations shared in bed and echoing the sound of the night crickets and the tree frogs in the palm trees beneath a canopy of stars and the Southern Cross.

That all changed with the crumbling economy and the loss of employment, spoiling what was once a paradise on earth.

It is not sufficient that I succeed – all others must fail.

 

Not one to mince words, 13th century Mongol ruler Chinggis (a.k.a. Genghis) Khan was a man with a singular vision - to conquer.  In firm possession of dynamic leadership skills and charisma to spare, he conquered more territory than any of his historical peers.


Was he a warlord of tyranny, or did Chinggis Khan have admirable qualities as well? 

It all depends on who you ask.

MY FATHER WAS A DOCTOR
A Descent Into Hell

My father was a doctor, a gynaecologist in fact. He built maternity wings and hospitals and at one stage was doctor in charge of Harare hospital, Zimbabweʼs largest hospital. He worked day and night and was the only doctor for thousands of people.

 

Today, patients are required to provide their own food and medicine at all the  hospitals in Zimbabwe. There are no bandages, no aspirin - not even the basics.
