WHAT: City of Los Angeles Councilmember and Metro Board member José Huizar will welcome the custom character Bart Simpson to the Olvera Street Kiosk when he arrives in a Metro Bus to tune up their bikes and kick off Bike to Work Week celebrations in Los Angeles County, which Metro and its partners, the Los Angeles City Department of Transportation (LADOT) and the Los Angeles County Bike Coalition (LACBC) will promote from Monday, May 11 to Friday, May 15 with bike rides, bike pit stops, prizes, free rides on public transit and lots of giveaways.

Monday will begin on a fun note with costume character Bart Simpson at Olvera Street, where he will join Councilmember Ed Reyes, Wendy Greuel, and Tom LaBonge, Metro CEO Art Leahy, LADOT General Manager and Metro Board member Rita Robinson and LACBC Executive Director Jennifer Klausner, to invite the public to bike to work at least one day a week.

Tuesday the Good Samaritan Hospital will host the Blessing of the Bikes in a non-denominational ceremony at 8 a.m. at their downtown facilities.

Wednesday Metro and LACBC will lead a Downtown Bike Ride beginning at 8 a.m. at the Civic Center Metro Rail Station to LA City Hall.

Thursday Metro and other municipal transit agencies will offer free rides to bicyclists who use public transit. Bring a bike or bike helmet and ride free. Also, Metro is coordinating bike pit stop locations for bicyclists to stop by and obtain free giveaways. For pit stop locations, go to www.metro.net/biketowork. And those who pledge on line at Metro’s web site in advance to bike to work can participate in a raffle for a hybrid electric bike and other prizes.

Friday the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and LACBC will celebrate Bike to School Day, promoting safe bike routes for students to get to and from school.
