The Los Angeles Customs District is the number one international trade center in the United States despite the global economic recession. International trade continues to provide more than 281,000 jobs in the region. During 2008, goods valued at more than $357 billion moved through the Los Angeles/Long Beach port complex and LAX/Ontario airports.

A year of change and recalibration lies ahead for many goods related industries, so port and airport traffic may fall again in 2009. Business may be off, but environmental progress is undeniably under way. Where Los Angeles-Long Beach lead, other ports will have to follow. This is SoCal's hidden competitive advantage according to the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC.
