Hardiness – the ability to withstand hardship or adverse conditions/a pattern of attitudes and skills that promote resilience
Resilience – the ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change/the capacity to survive and thrive despite stressful circumstances Webster/The Hardiness Institute |
Organizations and individuals that do well in challenging times are those agile and flexible enough to respond to change quickly and adaptable and open enough to find opportunity in it. We have chosen hardiness and resilience as our themes because how well we all do in going forward will depend on the extent to which we display those abilities. Throughout this issue, we will talk about Ayers initiatives designed to help our clients and candidates get through these challenging times and provide examples of how they themselves are proving to be hardy and resilient.

From The Director's Chair
by Joan Caruso
At a time when many companies would say, “Not now,” we are working with clients that have continued or even stepped up their commitment to employee development. This is noteworthy, because employee development contributes substantially to organizational resilience. Employees who are able to respond to change, recognize opportunity within it, and remain focused and motivated in a challenging environment create organizations that are hardy. Beginning with this issue, we will showcase what my OEC colleagues and I think are outstanding examples of this commitment.

Career Transition 2009 – Active Life Planning Program – Easing the Boomer Transition
by Terry Ebert
As the pressure to manage headcount rises, increasing numbers of baby boomers are being asked to consider voluntary separation. Although studies indicate that 80 percent of boomers intend to work after official retirement, many are reluctant to take advantage of voluntary retirement programs because they have no clear vision of what comes next – a major disincentive in a time of economic uncertainty.
Early retirement packages tend to be financially focused. HR professionals, strained by the waves of downsizing, lack the time and often the tools to help targeted employees look beyond the money – at the possibilities and opportunities. Retirement planners can help in assessing financial readiness, but there is little professional guidance available for deciding what to do next and how to make the transition.

Ayers Seminars Help Candidates Take Control
by Damon Montal
Improving hardiness and resilience are at the core of two monthly seminars offered to candidates in outplacement at the Ayers Group.
Play to Win
“Most of our seminars focus on techniques: how to write resumés, interview, network, research. I designed Play to Win to address internal issues,” says Damon Montal. “Success is based on cause and effect. It begins with how we interpret what’s happening to us – whether we view a situation as a threat or opportunity. That affects our emotional state, which helps determine our actions. Actions affect performance and, ultimately, results or outcomes.”

Successful Landings
“I’ve been in this business 20+ years and have never seen an environment quite like this,” said Joan Learn, Ayer’s Regional Manager of Career Transition Services in Connecticut. “People really need to get outside their ‘boxes’ and think differently. Many candidates come to us saying, ‘Now that I have to make a transition, I don’t want to do what I’ve been doing. I want more work/life balance.’ They know it’s going to be hard, but they’re reevaluating and looking to go in new directions. Helping candidates become more resilient and evaluate new options is more important than ever.” Following are examples of candidates who have gone outside the box.
