Ayers Initiatives Address Workplace Stress

In the last issue of the Ayers Report e-newsletter, we asked, “What is causing you the most stress?”  Readers who responded to our online survey said economic conditions and job security (75.9%), war and terrorist attacks (6.9%), SARS (1.7%), and all of these (15.5%).

The Ayers Group shares the concerns of HR professionals who continue to wrestle with high levels of workplace stress, which is taking an enormous toll on them and employees alike.  As a means of helping the HR community address the issues inherent in today’s unsettled and unsettling environment, the firm asked Dr. Yael Danieli to lead an open dialogue on “Managing Uncertainty in the Workplace.”

Dr. Danieli is a world-renowned clinical psychologist who conducted a similar session for Ayers’ clients after the September 11 terrorist attacks.  A founding director of The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, she serves as a consultant to governments, the UN, and other global institutions with regard to the care of survivors and victims.  More than 100 HR professionals representing a range of industries—from energy to entertainment, finance to fashion, pharmaceutical to publishing, and transportation to telecomm—attended the pro bono breakfast seminar, held at The Union League Club in Manhattan on May 21.

As a follow-up, the firm is conducting a broad-based client survey to determine the most important issues and challenges the HR community faces and the top concerns affecting employee morale and productivity.  Based on the findings, Ayers will create a quick reference guide—in the same format as The Leadership Challenge:  Managing After September 11th—to provide practical tips and techniques for dealing with specific issues and concerns.  The guide will be distributed later this summer and will be available via our Web site.
