Financial worries can be a serious distraction for anyone involved in a career transition.  Doug O'Connor, a Certified Financial Planner and Vice President at The Ayers Group, specializes in helping senior executives make transitions based on sound financial advice.
 
O'Connor, a former FORTUNE 500 financial executive, approaches the process from a business perspective.  "We begin with the candidate's vision," he says.  "More and more people are looking at alternative careers.  They recognize jobs may not be coming back in their industries, or they've had enough of corporate politics. So along with careers in new fields they may look at buying or starting a business, franchising, or giving back to the community in some way, such as teaching.  Some simply want to retire.
 
"We define the financial profile to determine whether the candidate is in a position to realize the vision. And I get the candidate to identify transferable skills by defining how he or she brings impact and value to an organization.  You need to tell that story no matter what options you plan to pursue."

The one-on-one counseling process is tailored to the individual's needs and may involve his or her spouse. Financial planning services may include any of the following areas:
  • Individual finance – financial condition review and counseling with regard to insurance, asset allocation and risk tolerance, debt management, education, retirement plans, and estate planning
  • Entrepreneurial finance – advice on tax structure and liability protection, funding sources, business plans  and presentations, and franchise evaluation
  • Offer negotiation – assistance in evaluating employment offers, including stock options, relocation packages, and change-of-control clauses
O'Connor also offers financial awareness seminars, which are open to all candidates on outplacement with The Ayers Group.  These programs cover debt management, insurance, investment strategies, retirement planning, and estate-planning basics.
