TechCom Manager Challenge

The role of a technical communicator seems to be constantly changing. We see it in college programs, on-the-job intern assignments, and even fortune 500 job descriptions. Nevertheless, something enticed each and every one of us to become a technical communicator, so I think most of us have something to share as to why we chose this profession.

As your editor, my challenge to you is to share with our readers how YOU would describe this ever-changing profession in order to encourage others to consider a techcom career. In the past, a lot of people used to think that a tech writer was a person in a lowly, back office, out-of-site, dead-end career that got little to no visibility. While this may or may not have been the case at some companies long ago, think about how our roles have changed over the last few years and even the last few decades. Then think about how you could describe techcom as a “cool” profession and where it could lead.

I’d like to publish your thoughts in an upcoming newsletter. Please send your feedback directly to me at: stevecapri@earthlink.net.

TechCom Poll
Deadline Poll
If you had to pick between a) meeting an important deadline with only 80% of the information you need, or b) risk missing your deadline after acquiring 100% of the information, which would you choose?
I would go with 80% of the information to meet my deadline.
I would wait until I had 100% of the information and risk missing the deadline.
