Banquet Nov. 30 Will Honor Businesses, Charities, Students

McCarthy Building Cos. Inc., based in the St. Louis suburb of Rock Hill, Mo., is the top winner of the BBB TORCH Awards for 2011. McCarthy and other winners will be honored Wednesday, Nov. 30, at a luncheon in the Chase Park Plaza's Khorassan Room.
 
The BBB also will award three 'Student of Ethics' Awards to high school students who will graduate in 2012.

A businessman whose lawn care companies have been the focus of numerous customer complaints is again sowing seeds of discontent throughout the St. Louis area.
The BBB suggests extreme caution when dealing with Matthew Buckingham or his Greener Spaces lawn service. Buckingham also has done business under the names Wholesale Lawn and Landscape and Buckingham Lawn.

Consumers Say Contractor Took Money, Failed To Complete Work

Residents of Missouri, Illinois and Kansas say they lost thousands of dollars each to a contractor from Columbia, Mo., who took money for building projects and then did little or no work. The man, Joshua B. Whitlock, has done business as Select Living Designs and Resort Barn. He also uses the alias Rick Richards.

New Missouri Law Bars 'No Deductible' Ads For Home Repair
Consumers Will Have 5 Days To End Contracts If Insurance Doesn't Cover Repairs

A law signed last month by Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon could keep contractors from promising to pay, refund or discount a project by the amount of insurance deductibles if they do repair work for a customer, the BBB says. Such promises often are made by unscrupulous contractors after a disaster, such as a tornado, flood or hailstorm.
