October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). Since the program began in 1985, mammography rates have more than doubled for women age 50 and older and breast cancer deaths have declined.

This is exciting progress, but there are still women who do not take advantage of early detection at all and others who do not get screening mammograms and clinical breast exams at regular intervals.

Komen Race For The Cure
http://www.komensandiego.org/komen-race-for-the-cu...

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure will take place on Sunday, November 1 in Balboa Park. This race raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.  When you participate in the race your entry fee gets you to the start line, but your personal fundraising helps to find the cures, and up to 75 percent of the funds you raise for the race remain right here in San Diego County.  The remaining 25 percent of each dollar you raise funds international research to discover the causes of breast cancer and its cures.  For more information or to register for the race click here.

Roasted Root Vegetable with Sorghum and Cider
by Cooking Light 2009

This delicous fall root vegetable dish is made with sorghum.  Sorghum, also known as sorghum molasses, is the distinctive, syrupy by-product of sorghum grain.  Look for it in specialty stores and gourmet markets, or substitute and use molasses.

Five Tips For Fall Fitness

1. Take advantage of the weather. Fall can be a treat for the senses: the crisp air, apple picking, pumpkin carving, a gorgeous canopy of fall foliage, and the crunch of leaves underfoot. These months are a great time to exercise outdoors and enjoy cooler temperatures.

2. Think outside the box. Always wanted to learn to tap dance? Attempt to box? Master the jump rope?  Many classes at gyms and elsewhere get started in the fall, so look around and see if something intrigues you.

3. Integrate exercise into your life. You already know the obvious suggestions: park farther away from your destination; take stairs instead of elevators; take a walk during your lunch break.

Fiber
Your daily dose

You need fiber for more than just a healthy digestive tract.  Fiber from foods can help you loose weight, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels and reduce diabetes and cardiovascular disease risks.

The recommended daily amount is 14 grams of dietary fiber for every 1,000 calories. That is 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men.  Plant foods, like whole grains, fruits and veggies, nuts, seeds, beans and legumes are your best picks.
