August is Cataract Awareness Month
Almost 20.5 million Americans age 40 and over have cataracts, one of the most curable causes of vision loss. August is Cataract Awareness Month and to recognize this observance eye doctors want to debunk the myths about cataracts and remind people that they do not have to live with vision loss and cataracts.

A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s normally clear lens, blocking the passage of light needed for vision. They form slowly and cause no pain. Some stay small and hardly affect vision, but if the cataract does grow or begin to affect your vision, it can usually be removed with surgery.

Asparagus
Super spears that are high in fiber and low in calories

Season: Fresh asparagus is in season from mid-April through the end of summer.

Prep Tip:  Whether you buy fat spears or skinny ones remember to remove the  woody stems before you cook them.

Fat Spears:  Ideal for steaming or roasting, gently peel fats spears before cooking.

Skinny Spears: best for grilling or sauteing, skinny spears do not require peeling.

Grow Your Own:  Asparagus, a member of the lily family, grows easily in home gardens- right in the flower bed. You can plant seeds or roots any time of the year- asparagus is a perennial and can yield a harvest for decades.

Now that you know the basics of asparagus try this lighter version of the classic one-dish Italian meal, Asparagus Carbonara, that emphasizes asparagus.

What Is Interval Training

Slimming down your troubled spots can be difficult. Even the best exercisers can’t overcome troubled spots with a poor diet.  The value of preparing and enjoying wholesome, natural foods in balanced amounts is just as important as exercise.  If your goal is to shed a few pounds you have to ditch the refined and packaged, processed foods.

To experience even faster results try to incorporate interval training into your regular exercise routine once or twice a week.  Interval training is an increasingly popular style of exercise in which you alternate “hard” and “easy,” mixing short periods of highly intense exercise with slightly longer periods of less-intense exercise.  Research shows that you burn more calories and fat and get more aerobically fit with intervals than with conventional “steady state” exercise.
