The 10th annual National Women’s Health Week will kick off on Mother’s Day, May 10, 2009.  National Women’s Health Week is a weeklong health observance coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health.  National Women’s Health Week empowers women to make their health a top priority.  With the theme “It’s Your Time,” the nationwide initiative encourages women to take a few simple steps for a longer, healthier, happier life.

Spinach, Feta and Tomato Quiche

This yummy quiche is light and makes a great spring meal.  The filling in this quiche can be replaced with your favorite veggies and cheese and this recipe also works well in a prepared pie crust.  Remember when making a quiche always sprinkle the cheese over the crust not on top of the pie.  This helps keep the crust from getting to soggy and also prevents any cheese from burning.

How Sweet It Is
Everyone's favorite addiction...SUGAR!
www.bootcampsofsd.com
by Tish Gehringer, Certified Personal Trainer

We consume sugar in every way shape and form, from that can of soda to the Mocha Frappuccino or even our favorite yogurt. Sugar is hiding in almost all our daily foods. Sugar in its natural form (sucrose) can be found in fruits, vegetables and dairy. In the altering of this molecule (sugar) we start to see the adverse effects of empty calories and added weight gain.

The recommended daily intake of added sugar is 36 grams per day. One can of soda has about 39 grams of added sugar.  If you consume one soda you have just wiped out your entire day’s allowance of sugar. To get a realistic understanding of how much sugar a can of soda contains, put 10 teaspoons of sugar into a glass -- you'll be shocked to see how much sugar you're taking in!

May Health Tip of the Month

Choose your sugar addiction and give up one item for one month. This will help you to drop pounds, stop feeling tired, and teach you to curb your sweet tooth!

Mother’s are very special people. They spend their days toiling away for the benefit of their family’s way beyond childhood and the teenage years.  Mother Nature has been identified as female for thousands of years, representing the giving of life and nurturing—which is quite fitting.
