Eco-friendly Kitchen Tips

Compost food waste.  Most people can easily reduce their post consumer waste by 20 percent by composting, and by composting you make your ingredients work double duty by reusing them in creative ways. You can start small by saving coffee grounds and spreading a small layer of them at the bottom of established plants that prefer acidic soil, such as strawberries, tomatoes and ferns.

Consider using the toaster oven when making meals for one or two. The toaster oven’s small size means it heats quickly, using less energy.

Understanding Organic Labeling Terms

Healthy living has generated a natural food trend.  Knowing the definitions and regulations for "organic" can help consumers understand marketing and labels.  Products that are certified organic and carry the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) seal, undergo the following requirements.

  • The farmland has been chemical free for a number of years, usually 10 or more.
  • Farmers under go periodic inspections.
  • Farmers keep detailed production and sales records.
  • Producers observe strict separation guidelines to keep organic and non-certified products separate.

Three Ways to Boost Your Metabolism
  1. Exercise more.  When you walk, run or lift weights you increase the energy required of your body, which raises your metabolism then and for hours afterward.
  2. Work out with weights.  During weight training muscle tissue is stressed; afterward it is repaired, which raises metabolism.
  3. Practice portion control.  This helps make sure you don’t over load your metabolism with a surplus of unusable energy.
