The Key to a Master Practice

It is easy to center all of the attention on dental techniques and forget that 85% of the success of a practice is dependent upon the way patients are treated.  As concerns that 85%, a team building system is the most important key to success.  Here are some helpful suggestions for perfecting that team building process.  They are suggested by Cynthia McKane-Wagester who is President/Founder of McKane & Associates:

1. The receptionist should be prepared to identify each patient and call him/her by name whether in person or on the phone. From this, the patients receive a welcoming message of warmth and helpfulness that draws them closer to the practice.

2. The front office must have its systems well organized with effective scheduling at the top of the priority list so that down time is minimized.

3. Assistants must be knowledgeable regarding every case and able to converse intelligently with patients in layman language about their dental needs.  It is surely to the assistants’ credit when patients accept dental treatment as a result of their involvement and counseling.

4. Hygienists must take responsibility for maintaining the periodontal program and be ready to counsel patients about dental needs including restorative needs.  They should be aware of each patient’s comfort level.  Hygienists must be responsible for helping to keep the recare schedule filled and should assume responsibility not only for retention of patients but reactivation of those who appear to be neglecting dental care.

5. The doctor, assistant or hygienist, whoever is appropriate, should contact patients after they have had a long visit.  The call needs to be a natural expression of concern and never mechanical or contrived.

6. Each dental team member should share ideas and suggestions for the betterment of the practice and be prepared to implement those ideas.

When attention is given to all of these things, the result is an increased level of personal and professional fulfillment and a true master practice.
