Tip of the Week

Art Anderson, your DentalSuccess Tipster, talks about:

Turning Average into Superior Dentistry

Here are five tried and true principles that make the difference between average and superior dentistry.  They are provided by Dr. D. Gregory Hiebert who has a general practice in Miami, Oklahoma:

1. There is no substitute for a thorough exam.

2. Make recommendations with confidence regardless of your suppositions about the patient’s ability to pay or disposition to accept the recommendation.

3. When a patient doesn’t accept the recommended treatment, or is unhappy when the treatment is completed, it is usually because you didn’t present everything he/she needed to know before the procedure was agreed upon and started.

4. It is better and more ethical to present the whole picture forthrightly and recommend the total treatment even if the patient doesn’t accept the recommendation.  That is better than just doing a crown, for instance, that the patient requested, on the basis that a little revenue is better than none.

5. It is not uncommon to have a patient say, “I don’t want anything cosmetic.”  Many have something negative in their minds about that.  If this is the case, you can explain that it is not a matter of cosmetics and aesthetics, but a matter of reconstructing the mouth for the sake of good health.  If it happens that the materials used make the teeth extremely beautiful, that’s just an extra dividend. This makes patients feel that they are investing money in complete health and not just on appearance.
