Tip of the Week

Art Anderson, your DentalSuccess Tipster, says:

Think Your Way to Good Health

It would surely be great if thinking alone would do the whole job of providing good health.  Of course that’s not a total cure but it is a great tonic according to Dr. John I. Walker who is a psychiatrist and Director of Professional and Community Education at Laurel Ridge Hospital in San Antonio, Texas.

He says that the way we interpret life experiences determines the chemicals that our bodies make.  If we do something that we interpret as exhilarating, our bodies make very powerful “happy” chemicals known as immunomodulators.  They fight cancer, infection, degenerative illnesses and auto-immune disease.  Conversely, if we do something that we interpret as fearful, our bodies make negative hormones (cortisol or adrenaline). By focusing on what we see, hear or feel that is helpful, we can build up healthy immunomodulators.

This might give some guidance when planning the morning huddle.  If there are some patients on the appointment list for the day who are traditionally grumpy or difficult to deal with, dwelling on the negative side of the prospective experience with them could have all kinds of adverse effects not only on the patients but on the health of the dental team members. The better approach would be to dwell on positive ways to meet the challenge of dealing with them.

A little self-analysis might be appropriate here to be sure there are no paranoids on the dental team.  The paranoids focus on thoughts of persecution.  They reinforce each other’s suspicions and hyperscan the environment looking for evidence that supports their paranoid thinking.

Healthy people on the other hand look forward with optimistic anticipation to the day’s events.  Now that you know that such thinking generates those “happy” chemicals, just adjust the brain and go for it.
