Tip of the Week

Art Anderson shares this week’s tip...

Helping the Dental Team to Work as a Team

In most successful dental practices, all members of the dental team take responsibility to make the practice function in an excellent fashion.  To be excellent, it is essential that the clinical skills, attitude, philosophy, and systems of the practice work in perfect harmony together. Here are the elements of an excellent practice:
  • There is a skilled manager who has responsibility to help select the team members.  He/she coordinates the team’s effort and oversees the entire operation.
  • The team members know their jobs and have the skills to do them well.  They are committed to making a contribution to the success of the whole.
  • There is a plan that everyone understands.  The plan is flexible so changes can be made when circumstances change.
  • Dental team members communicate with each other, trust and support each other and resolve differences in a constructive manner.
  • There is a reward system that meets the needs of each member of the team and of the office as a whole.
The word team is used deliberately as opposed to group or staff.  There is graduation from group or staff status to team status when there is a common purpose that is understood by all of the members.  Within effective teams, each member has an assigned role using his/her talent to the best advantage. When members integrate their skills to accentuate strengths and minimize weaknesses, team objectives are usually achieved.

Teamwork takes conscious effort to develop and continuous effort to maintain, but rewards can be great.
