I am lucky.  As an associate professor of music history at Southern Methodist University, I spend my days with hard-working young people filled with dreams about their futures as professional musicians.  But another joy graces my experience: the joy of sharing information about music with the “real people”—the adult audiences whom I’ve been privileged to serve since coming to Dallas in 1985.   The “real people” are you—people who, season after season, fill the seats of the halls and cheer on the very performers my students hope to become!

Mendelssohn and the Rebirth of Bach's Music
Part 1 of a series devoted to the Revival of Historic Repertoire


Today in concert halls and opera houses, works from past eras dominate the repertoire.  This has not always been the case.  Audiences expected freshly composed works—in many instances, sacred vocal pieces would be composed for the next Sunday’s church services; operas would be commissioned for certain occasions, performed a few times and forgotten; and instrumental music would be composed for a specific commemoration or festival.
