Discussing Assessment Data With Clients
by Renie McClay, SMT President
Are you looking for a way to discuss assessment data with your clients? The last organization assessment I participated in, I used a one page “cheat sheet” while reviewing assessment data with a manager. This can be a full-blown assessment or just a quick one. When discussing the results with the leader we reviewed two main areas:
- What do the numbers say?
- What should we do about it?
First we look at, what is this telling us? As a leader, what jumps out at you? Do you see any inconsistencies? Identify critical skills (items rated as most important) Identify strengths (items rated as proficient) Identify development areas (items rated as least proficient) How do we fix it? Communication/expectations – do any items need to be addressed Tools or job aids – anything helpful to improve efficiency or effectiveness Training – prioritize training needs; what will make the biggest impact now This helps to set the expectation that every solution isn’t a workshop.
