“Our professional development certificate programs offer a level of expertise for working professionals who are looking to glean training and knowledge and to use that knowledge directly in the marketplace. The information is practical, relevant and easy to apply.” - Debbie Cortez According to Debbie Cortez, program coordinator at San José State University's Professional Development Center (PDC), what differentiates PDC is its consistent focus on continual learning and training for working professionals. Cortez manages three of PDC’s core programs: Marketing, Nonprofit Management and Event and Meeting Planning. She brings 13 years of corporate experience to her job. As a program coordinator, Cortez often meets with students in private consultation to fine-tune their schedules as they progress toward their certificates. Many of PDC’s certificate students work part-time and take two to three courses per month. For many working professionals, completing a certificate program means an entry to a different job in a new and exciting industry. For others, solidifying their skill palette and learning more about their industry and specialty can mean a promotion, new skills or simply an enhanced knowledge base. Despite changes in the economy, support from corporate training continues. Most companies feel it is worthwhile to invest in their employees’ training to ensure low turnover and high production. In a competitive market, the career-oriented also feel a need to invest in their long-term career goals. “I think more and more people are realizing that transferable skills are the keys to a long and successful career—that training and learning are lifelong processes,” says Cortez. “The PDC curriculum and schedule is truly tailored to working professionals. Some certificates can be obtained in only three to six months, and the knowledge learned can be applied almost immediately.” Another example of professional-friendly scheduling is the accelerated summer program in Event and Meeting Planning. This collaboration between San José State University, Sonoma State University and San Francisco State University is a full value certificate program. In the summer of 2004, students can complete this certificate in only three weeks by taking courses at all three campuses. One of the greatest benefits of completing a PDC certificate program is the networking. The classes are instant networking opportunities, introducing students to a new circle of peers as well as giving them access to expert faculty with wide industry experience. “In a constantly evolving economy,” Cortez concludes, “upgrading one’s skills and education are the key components to success. At San José State’s certificate programs, students can truly develop their skills and apply those skills almost immediately to the workplace.”
