Following the publication of the 2002 Year-End Report, People Report™ announced the list of “Top Performers” in People Practices.  This recognition acknowledges restaurant companies ranking in the top 15% of People Report™ membership for their excellence in the key performance metrics of management retention and composite management diversity.

Leading the general consortium in management retention were: California Pizza Kitchen, The Cheesecake Factory, Claim Jumper Restaurants, Corner Bakery Café, Lawry’s Restaurants, Maggiano’s Little Italy, Old Chicago and Red Lobster. The average annual management turnover for this elite group of members was 14%, a new record, and a new standard for best in class performance. Topping the list in management retention for quick service restaurants are El Pollo Loco and Mazzio’s Pizza.  (Top 15% in QSR)

“Top Performers” in People Report’s Composite Diversity Index (the measure of how many women and racially diverse persons are hired at the management level) for the general consortium were Chevys Fresh Mex®, The Keg Steakhouse and Bar, la Madeleine French Bakery & Café, Main Street & Main, Mimi’s Café, Pappas Restaurants, Sweet Tomatoes & Souplantation and Taco Cabana.  Del Taco, El Pollo Loco and Noah’s New York Bagels led the quick service restaurants in composite management diversity. (Top 15% in QSR)

“As predicated, People Report™ members continue to cover new ground in their people practices”, said Joni Thomas Doolin, CEO & founder of People Report™.  “17 chain restaurant concepts finished the year in the “Under 25%” club, including eight companies who finished the year below 20% functional turnover. Best in class for QSR concepts was 36%, an impressive 13 points below the overall segment average.”

The Composite Diversity Index™ (CDI) for the overall consortium increased two points during 2002, fueled primarily by an increase in the numbers of Hispanic males hired into management ranks.  During the past five years, the People Report™ consortium has posted positive gains almost 10 points in the overall CDI, reflecting rapidly changing population demographics, as well as the focused and committed efforts of members to expand their hiring pools to include more women and persons of color.

The 2002 Year-End Report, published on April 11, 2003, imparts predictions and potential solutions related to critical workforce issues faced by the labor-intensive foodservice industry.   Additional research published in this segmented wrap-up includes annual performance benchmarks, analysis and trends in: incumbent and new hire management compensation, complete management demographics, average management tenure, full study of the reasons for voluntary management turnover, recruiting efficiency metrics including cost per hire and recruiter productivity, sourcing strategies, and employee turnover.
