PRESIDENT'S LETTER
|
From the President
by Roger Haynes
Well, here we go again! For those of us in public, it is already time to start all over with another filing season. Although everything seems to be changing all around, whether it is the economy, the president, or whatever, taxes are always with us.
The Chapter finished up 2008 with another successful Federal Tax Update presented by Steve Tillinger. This year we had a record crowd with approximately 260 in attendance. Further, 2009 started off with a bang as we hosted our 1st Annual Casino Night on January 23rd. We played Texas Hold ‘em Poker, Craps, Roulette, and Blackjack, ate food, anticipated the prizes and socialized. I continue to receive comments on how much fun it was to be a part of the evening. With over 85 in attendance including students from WTAMU, I think this event was a great success. Hopefully, it is a start of something we can build on each year. I want to think all the members of the committee; Becky Douglass, Kristie Hutchison, Gary Mitchell, Alicia Pickens, Dennis Spear, and Jobie Ogburn for all their hard work in organizing this event.
Mark Your Calendars! Coming up on Friday, February 20th we will have a joint meeting with the Amarillo Estate Planning Council during lunch at the Amarillo Club. Royce Medlin, CFA with the Smith Group, a diversified domestic equity manager, from Dallas will be speaking on the Stock Market and the Economic Outlook for 2009. This should be a very interesting and timely topic. Be sure and click below to download a registration form as this should be a great time to network with other professionals in the AAEPC.
Have a great tax season!
Thanks....Roger Haynes

NEWS and NOTES

What Fun!
Friday, January 23, was our First Annual Casino Night. The Committee tried to serve three purposes in holding the event. Provide a networking and social time for the members, get to know the student members better and raise money for the scholarship fund.
Casino Night was held at the American Quarter Horse Museum, and the location couldn't have been better. We had around 85 in attendance. We did a few things right and learned some things to make next year better. The Committee hopes that this is a start to a yearly event for the membership. Use the fulll story link to see a few pictures on the evening.

Get IRS Information Online
Obtain up-to-the-minute information on tax and IRS changes by visiting the TSCPA Tax Issues online community at http://tscpa.org/resource/membercommunities/taxissues/index.asp. After logging in as a member, you’ll find links to a variety of resources.
You can also receive the tax issues e-newsletter (at no charge, as a member benefit) by sending a subscription request to pwyatt@tscpa.net.
Raising the Profession’s Profile in Your Community
As part of TSCPA’s effort to connect CPAs with community service opportunities, the Society has prepared a list of five ways you can make a difference where you live. 1. Sponsor a team or take part in a tournament for charity. Bring along your spouse, children, friends, and co-workers for added fun. 2. Let a high school student see what being a CPA is all about by participating in Junior Achievement’s Groundhog Day job shadowing program. Get more information at www.jobshadow.org. 3. Help low-income people who cannot prepare their own tax returns by participating in the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. To locate the VITA site nearest you, call 800-829-1040. 4. Join the local board of a nonprofit organization that helps those in need. (To broaden your skill set and get a break from the tasks you perform at work, don’t hesitate to request volunteer assignments in areas other than finance.) 5. Tutor students in math or reading as they prepare for statewide testing.
Financial Literacy
If a personal finance resolution tops your list or the list of someone you know this New Year, stop by www.ValueYourMoney.org. Texas Society of CPAs’ free consumer financial literacy Web site features practical articles and helpful resources to get your finances on track in 2009. Be sure to check out the new downloadable financial fitness wall calendar on the homepage under Personal Finance Tools. Also, visit the Parenthood section for information about the children’s book club, which promotes literature to help them learn that money really doesn’t grow on trees.
Membership Recruitment
The autumn recruitment campaign has come to a successful close. TSCPA welcomed 360 new CPA members and 440 new student members. Many thanks to those who recruited new members!
