NCATT Awarded $657,000 by NSF
August 2007 saw NCATT’s most recent funding award by the National Science Foundation (NSF). This latest award of $657,000 brings the NSF’s original and continuation funding for NCATT projects to greater than $1.5 million. Through NCATT, the NSF continues to make a significant investment in the aerospace industry, especially in the areas of avionics and electronic technician certification. This may well be the first example of direct and dedicated funding from the government (through the NSF) that is provided – without strings – for an industry organization (NCATT) to support, advance and promote aerospace industry technicians in accordance with aerospace industry and technician needs. Rather than providing regulation and oversight, the NSF’s continuing commitment to NCATT establishes a unique government and industry partnership that recognizes and promotes individual technician professionalism in the nations most critical and technology driven industry.

The first “NCATT Accredited Training Provider” recognition in the area of avionics / electronics was awarded in April of 2007 to the National Aviation Academy of Clearwater, Florida. CCAF Credit, Navy COOL & the VA
NCATT AET certifications are being recognized and encouraged by government agencies, the military and the aerospace industry. The Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) awards five (5) credit hours to U.S. Air Force technicians that have achieved the AET Certification and the U.S. Navy “COOL Program” provides certification reimbursement for Navy and Marine technicians who successfully complete the AET certification examination. The Texas Veterans Administration provides certification reimbursement to eligible veterans who receive NCATT AET Certification. This benefit is expected nationwide in the upcoming months. As additional NCATT avionics and electronics certifications along with other industry identified NCATT certifications are developed, those certifications will be evaluated for credit and inclusion in the military and veterans programs.

AEA Provides AET Testing Opportunities
This fall AET certification examinations were provided compliments of the Aircraft Electronics Association and NCATT at the AEA Regional Meetings in St. Louis, Missouri, Irvine, California and Orlando, Florida. AET certification exams were administered free of charge to the technician. AEA and NCATT will also be providing complimentary exams at the national conference in 2008.

PARTNERS
Partner Spotlight
NCATT’s mission statement is to facilitate a cohesive alliance of industry, government, and education to promote aircraft maintenance professionalism. This mission cannot be accomplished without the continuous input and guidance of our many partners. During this issue of the newsletter we would like to introduce and spotlight two of our partners, National Aviation Academy of Clearwater, Florida and Delta Airlines.

National Aviation Academy - Gary Monti
Gary Monti Explains Installation & Troubleshooting to his students.
The educational partners are an important link between the potential technicians and the skills that the address. The National Aviation Academy (NAA) in Clearwater, Florida, is one such partner. In addition to a productive educational partnership NAA is also the first recipient of the title of NCATT Accredited Training Provider in the area of Aircraft Electronics / Avionics. Gary Monti is head of the avionics program at NAA. Please click below for the full article.

FOE
FOE Certification on Track for Distribution
The FOE certification for Elements of Basic Awareness has entered into the beta testing process and is slated for release during the first quarter of 2008.  As beta testing is completed, the certification exam will be available nationally and internationally by NCATT’s testing partner, LaserGrade testing centers.  For information on the FOE standards, including the electronic resources and the study guide, visit www.ncatt.org.

Aerospace Assembly
NCATT Broadens its Horizon
In addition to avionics /aircraft electronics and FOE, the aerospace industry has expressed interest in working with NCATT in the development of certifications in Aerospace Assembly. NCATT has recently worked with manufacturers including American Eurocopter, Bell Helicopter, Boeing, Cessna, Lockheed Martin, Mooney Airplane Company and Vought Aircraft to establish national standards and a certification for aerospace assemblers. The initial occupational analysis and the forthcoming standards will be validated by the participating organizations as well as other representatives from the Aerospace Manufacturing community. Once again NCATT will be able to give a voice to the aerospace industry in determining the standard for its technicians, educators and training providers.  For more information on this initiative or if your organization would like to participate please contact Lee Brewster (lbrewster@ncatt.org).
