Founded in 1887, Jackson Walker L.L.P. is one of the oldest and largest Texas-based law firms. Jackson Walker offers expertise in virtually every area of the law through a strong regional base of over 300 attorneys in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Richardson, San Angelo, and San Antonio. The firm regularly represents clients in such areas as Corporate and Securities, Litigation, Intellectual Property, Health Care, Labor and Employment, Legislative and Regulatory, Real Estate, Tax and Estate Planning, Technology, Bankruptcy, Aviation and International Law.
JW has always been dedicated to supporting organizations that advocate the advancement of women in business. Because of this dedication, Jackson Walker women attorneys have always taken active roles in and given significant time and energy to the leadership of those organizations.
For over six years, the firm and its women attorneys have been significantly involved in supporting NAWBO through underwriting/sponsoring events, assisting in creating new chapters, and offering free legal services.
Currently, Jackson Walker's attorneys, Retta Miller and Stephanie Chandler, serve as General Counsel, in-kind, for the DFW and San Antonio NAWBO chapters handling legal matters for NAWBO and providing legal advice. In 1997, Jackson Walker provided highly experienced corporate attorneys to assist in the creation and organization of the San Antonio chapter. JW also offers a free legal Hotline to the San Antonio (210-978-7701) and DFW (214-953-6035) chapter members. The Hotline provides NAWBO members with legal advice regarding minor problems incurred in their professional capacity as business owners. Hotline issues often include such matters as how to incorporate a business, how to properly terminate an employee, how to protect a business's name and trademark, or how to respond when a lawsuit has been filed against the member's business. The Hotline is available during regular business hours, five days a week. Jackson Walker attorneys Cami Boyd, Shalyn Timmons, and Misti Weeks, among others, staff the Hotline.
Jackson Walker's continual support of NAWBO also includes sponsoring numerous events, participating in seminars and workshops, and serving on various committees. Many of Jackson Walker's attorneys have served as panel members and/or speakers at NAWBO events regarding legal issues. For instance, on June 21, 2002, at NAWBO's annual meeting, which JW has sponsored for many years, JW attorneys hosted a workshop entitled "Negotiations with the Big Company." Currently, JW attorneys Misti Weeks and Shalyn Timmons are serving on the Annual Event Committee and Corporate Partner Committee.
Jackson Walker is a major corporate sponsor of both San Antonio and DFW chapters and received the 1997 DFW NAWBO Corporate Partner of the Year. Outside of its involvement with NAWBO, Jackson Walker supports women business owners in a variety of other ways, including its sponsorship of the Greater Dallas Chamber Annual Women’s Business Conference. JW attorney Retta Miller chaired the conference the first three years (1996-1998), and JW attorney Joan Sostek served as co-chair for two years (1999 and 2002). Jackson Walker also serves as a corporate member of Women’s Business Council Southwest. Retta Miller serves on the Board and Executive Committee of the Women’s Business Council Southwest.
