A
way of comparing Florida’s students to the rest of the nation is by looking
at Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) scores. According to the College Board,
SATs are designed to assess many of the skills that are important to students’
success in college. In 2003, the mean score of Central Florida school
districts was 998; the State of Florida’s mean score was 992; and the US
mean score was 1026. While some Central Florida school districts scored better
than the State, the region still lags behind the rest of the country.

Quality Education is at the core of a vibrant and flourishing community. While our higher education institutions have a national reputation in many of their program offerings, the pre-K through 12 education system continues to face serious challenges that affect many aspects of the region. myregion.org has developed specific strategies that are geared toward achieving greater educational prominence. These include: hosting an educational leadership summit of the superintendents of the eight public school districts, the Central Florida School Boards Coalition and executives from the region's major employers; establishing a strategic training fund for the region's underutilized workers; and making higher education possible for high school graduates. For Central Florida to become globally
competitive in the 21st century, it will take a community effort to move
the region's pre-K to 12 educational system into the top 10 percent
nationally in the areas of science and math. Targeting the programs needed
to achieve this goal will be the focus of the first-ever Central Florida
Education Summit, to be held April 21st at the Rosen Centre. The
superintendents of eight counties, as well as key business executives and
community leaders from throughout the region, will be in attendance.
