Regional Leaders Make Commitment to Continue Regional Efforts in 2008
Recognizing that the hard work is still ahead if Central Florida is to ultimately achieve the future outlined in the Central Florida Regional Growth Vision, the 16 elected officials who comprise the Central Florida Joint Policy Framework Committee unanimously agreed at their October 25, 2007 meeting to continue to champion the Central Florida Regional Growth Vision. During the 18-month “How Shall We Grow?” campaign that began in March 2006, Mayors, County Chairs and Commissioners and School Board Members met regularly to discuss the key growth issues facing Central Florida. While the “How Shall We Grow?” campaign culminated with the unveiling of the Central Florida Regional Growth Vision on August 10, 2007, leaders from across the region recognize that implementation of the vision will take continued collaboration by leaders from across Central Florida. Jacob Stuart, President of myregion.org outlined the commitment made during the Regional Summit on August 10 when the committee members pledged to work together to: · Develop appropriate regional policies; · Promote understanding and support of the Vision; · Monitor progress toward the Vision, and; · Develop a process for updating the Vision to respond to evolving regional trends The Joint Policy Framework Committee, which includes the Chair or Immediate Past Chair from each of the seven county governments, a City Mayor from each county and two members of the Central Florida Public School Boards Coalition, was originally created to develop regional policies to support the six primary principles of the Regional Growth Vision. As part of the Regional Vision, the committee created the Regional Policy Framework, which includes regional policies to: · Preserve open space, recreational areas, farmland, water resources, and regionally significant natural areas. · Provide a variety of transportation choices. · Foster distinct, attractive, and safe places to live. · Encourage a diverse, globally competitive economy. · Create a range of obtainable housing opportunities and choices. · Build communities with educational, health care, and cultural amenities. The committee has already started addressing components within the policy framework including development of a regional greenprint, and expansion of the Central Florida MPO Alliance to include all transportation organizations in Central Florida. A unanimous vote at their meeting on October 25, 2007 formalized the committee’s commitment to create an organizational structure and meet on a regular basis in 2008. They will have a conference call in November and then adopt their organizational structure and specific next steps during their meeting on December 10, 2007.
