After How Shall We Grow? - What's Next for the Regional Growth Vision?
The Regional Summit on August 10, 2007 marked the conclusion of the 18-month campaign to answer the question “How Shall We Grow?” So, now that the Central Florida Regional Growth Vision has been unveiled, what’s next? For the shared vision to become reality, elected officials, community leaders and citizens must be willing to work together and to make the “tough choices” needed to move away from our current path. As part of the regional vision, members of the Joint Policy Framework Committee, representing the seven counties, 86 cities and seven school boards in Central Florida, signed the Central Florida Regional Compact, which is a historic commitment by elected officials to continue working together on developing and implementing policies that will help move forward the key themes and principles addressed in the vision. In addition, the How Shall We Grow? partner organizations pledged their support of the vision and assistance in moving from the vision to reality. But elected officials and community leaders are not the only ones who have committed to stepping forward in implementing the vision. At the Regional Summit, more than 300 citizens made personal commitments on how they intend to help ensure a better Central Florida for future generations. You can read all the commitments and also see what you can do. Ultimately, the responsibility of changing policies and procedures in ways that will make a significant impact on the future of Central Florida will fall on the elected leaders of the region. For that reason, the Joint Policy Framework Committee will continue to meet and promote implementation of the vision across the region. The committee will meet two more times in 2007, on October 25 and December 10. To support the efforts of the elected officials, the MPO Alliance, Regional Planning Councils and myregion.org have all committed to make implementing the Regional Growth Vision part of their regular efforts to think and act regionally. By working together, we can make Central Florida a great place to live, learn, work and play for generations to come.
