Community and business leaders participating in the 2006 Central Florida Regional “Fly-In” to our state capital, slated for March 22-23, will likely learn the fate of the proposed UCF Medical School as the “Fly-In” will conveniently coincide with the critical March 23rd University Board of Governors meeting where a decision is expected. In addition to the important UCF Medical School decision, participants will hear from a number of key legislators on a host of important state and regional issues. To kick off the “Fly-In” program, 2006 Honorary “Fly-In” Chair Rep. Sheri McInvale (R-Orlando) will escort in House Majority Leader Rep. Andy Gardiner (R-Orlando) and House Fiscal Council Chair Rep. Joe Negron (R-Stuart). They will be followed by Rep. Bruce Antone (D-Orlando), joined by his Democratic Party colleagues, House Minority Leader-designate Rep. Dan Gelber (D-Miami Beach) and Senate Democratic Leader Pro Tempore Sen. “Skip” Campbell (D-Tamarac).
A wide-ranging discussion of top regional issues will occur later during in the afternoon of March 22nd when Orange County Delegation Chair Rep. Sandy Adams (R-Oviedo), along with Seminole County Delegation member Sen. Lee Constantine (R-Altamonte Springs), Osceola County Delegation Chair Sen. Mike Haridopolos (R-Melbourne) and Brevard County Delegation member Rep. Bob Allen (R-Merritt Island) brief participants on how the region may fare in the session.
Capping off the afternoon sessions will be a special “Town Hall” forum when 2010 House Speaker-designate Rep. Dean Cannon (R-Winter Park) hosts 2007 House Speaker-designate Rep. MarcoRubio (R-Miami) and 2009 House Speaker-designate Rep. Ray Sansom (R-Ft. Walton Beach) for a stimulating dialogue with our region’s business and community leaders on “100 Innovative Ideas for Florida’s Future.”
On hand the next morning will be Florida’s Agriculture Commissioner Charlie Bronson who will discuss the important role his office plays in better protecting Florida consumers. Later, the powerful chairs of the Senate and House Judiciary Committees, Sen. Dan Webster (R-Winter Garden) and Rep. David Simmons (R-Longwood) appear to update participants on prospects for the top two issues on the “Florida Business Agenda” – Constitutional Amendment and Lawsuit Abuse Reform.
The issue-packed morning program will conclude with a transportation report from Senate Transportation and Economic Development Appropriations Committee member Sen. Paula Dockery (R-Lakeland) and presentations by the legislature’s top education leaders, 2007 Senate President-designate Sen. Ken Pruitt (R-Port St. Lucie), Rep. Adam Hasner (R-Delray Beach) and Rep. David Mealor (R-Lake Mary) on several important education issues, including legislative plans to modify the costly “Class Room Size Amendment.”
