Naturally Central Florida: Fitting the Pieces Together
The University of Central Florida Metropolitan Center for Regional Studies and myregion.org are proud to present renowned writer Carl Hiaasen for an in-depth discussion concerning environmental preservation and the Naturally Central Florida initiative on Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at The Ballroom at Church Street, Downtown Orlando.

The author of eight best-selling novels including Sick Puppy and Skinny Dip, Carl Hiaasen also has an outstanding reputation as an investigative journalist. A three-time Pulitzer Prize nominee and defender of Florida's environment, Carl is a columnist at The Miami Herald and has written over 1300 pieces exposing land corruption scams, drug smuggling rings, dangerous doctors and corrupt politicians.

The Naturally Central Florida: Fitting the Pieces Together is the first document in a community process to protect and sustain the exceptional ecosystems of Central Florida. Seven “jewels of our natural world” in Central Florida are identified and showcased. These are “must save” places with regional, national, (and in some cases) global ecological and economic value that benefit Florida and the Nation.

Central Florida has long been treasured for its beautiful environment. White, sandy beaches, diverse ecosystems, and a wide variety of plants and animals make our community an exciting place to live and visit. However, decades of rapid growth and poor resource management are threatening Central Florida’s natural resources and financial future. To sustain environmental and economic prosperity, we must alter our region’s destiny by making collaborative decisions that encourage ecologic responsibility and foster environmental excellence.
