PRISM: Promoting Regional Improvement in Science & Math
Contributed by: John Koenig, President, O-Force: The Orlando Regional Partnership for Tomorrow’s Workforce
The PRISM Project, an initiative launched to strengthen math and science education in Central Florida school districts, kicks off in 2006 with a $900,000 fundraising campaign. Donations will provide cash awards for high-performing math and science teachers, sponsor middle schools teams in math and science competitions, and create incentives to encourage high school students to take more-rigorous math and science courses.
PRISM (Promoting Regional Improvement in Science and Math) was developed in response to myregion.org’s Educational Excellence resolve, which called for a “regional pre-K to 12 educational strategy capable of placing Central Florida in the top 10 percent of the nation’s school systems.” The goal of the project is, quite simply, to achieve recognized, world leadership in math and science in 10 years.
Participating in PRISM are the seven school districts of the myregion area – Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole and Volusia – plus Hillsborough County. Leading project and fundraising campaign is O-Force, a regional business-and-education partnership focused on workforce development.
For more information, please visit: www.theprismproject.org. You can also view information about the work of PRISM in the December 2005 issue of Florida Trend. The PRISM project will be the focus of the myregion.org Board of Directors Meeting scheduled for Friday, February 10, 2006, at the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport.
