Brevard Tomorrow Celebrates Success; Announces New Initiative

As myregion.org addresses the issue of being globally competitive and maintaining a high quality of life from a regional perspective, there are organizations across the seven counties of Central Florida working to ensure a preferred future for the citizens of these communities.

One such example is in Brevard County where citizens are taking steps in shaping their future through the efforts of Brevard Tomorrow.

Founded in 2001 and coordinated through the Leadership Brevard Program, Brevard Tomorrow is a community initiative tasked with helping to create and implement the strategies and goals necessary to achieve a preferred future in Brevard County.

Brevard Tomorrow has targeted five key areas: Economy, Land Use and Growth, Governance, Education and Workforce, and Civic Infrastructure. Project teams comprised of volunteer citizens, organizations and businesses work to achieve the goals and implement the strategies necessary in each area to help achieve the overall goal of a preferred future.

The organization, which includes more than 100 energetic volunteers from throughout the county, held their annual public celebration on August 25, 2005 to recognize the success they have enjoyed over the last year while also conveying their goals for the future.

During the celebration, the efforts of each project team were displayed in a new video that is being shown on public access television in Brevard. Members of each project team also provided brief reports on what has been accomplished, as well as the goals of the future, in their specific area.

It was evident that the greatest strength of Brevard Tomorrow is the unified passion of the committee members. The community volunteers are committed to help create a Brevard County that accentuates the positive qualities of living in Central Florida.

A new initiative announced during the celebration was the creation of the Young Professionals of Brevard.  One challenge Brevard faces is that while there is an influx of young professionals moving into the area, they are finding it difficult to weave those individuals into the fabric of the community.

A new study released during the celebration showed that 60% of the young professionals (defined as being age 40 and under) living in the county are unsure of whether they will stay in the county longer than three years.

According to Rebecca Ryan, Founder of Next Generation Consulting, which surveyed young professionals in the county, the reason so many were non-committal about their future was because the community has not been aggressive in ensuring they are actively engaged.

The formation of the Young Professionals of Brevard County is designed to bring together, both socially and civically, people with similar interests and age demographics. The organization is off to a strong start with more than 70 charter members.
