myregion.org Partners With Florida on the Move
Promoting healthy lifestyle choices is one of the original priority goals established by myregion.org. For that reason, myregion.org is partnering with Florida on the Move, an organization designed to help reduce obesity and promote a healthy lifestyle, to encourage Central Floridians to eat healthy and stay active.

Part of the national America on the Move program, Florida on the Move has been active throughout the state for the last year. A majority of the more than 11,000 people who currently participate in the program come from Central Florida.
Florida On the Move is dedicated to helping individuals and communities make positive changes to improve health and quality of life. By focusing on individuals and communities they strive to support healthy eating and active living habits in our society.

The eating and physical activity patterns of most Americans have made us the most overweight nation in the world. More than 60% of American adults do not get the recommended 30 minutes of physical activity a day; 25% of American adults are not physically active at all. More than 120 million Americans — 64.5% of the adult population — are overweight; nearly 59 million, or 31%, are obese. The average American adult is gaining 1-3 pounds each year, and some people gain even more.

It’s all about energy balance! We can stop weight gain by creating a balance between the amount of energy burned and the amount of food consumed throughout a normal day. The message is simple: move more and eat less. According to Florida on the Move, making these small changes daily is all it takes. By walking an extra 2,000 steps (the equivalent of about 1 mile) and eating only 100 fewer calories each day, individuals can prevent weight gain and begin to see big results.

Florida on the Move will be holding an Obesity Summit on September 30, 2005 from 9:00 a.m. -3:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Orlando. This event will include several renowned speakers on the subject of health and obesity.  They will also outline the Florida on the Move Program and show how easy it is for individuals and businesses to become actively engaged.

As part of the program, myregion.org will be hosting a 2,000-step walk from 11:40 a.m. -12:15 p.m.  Cost for the entire event, which includes lunch, snacks, parking, and the program template, is $30.
