Orange County Moves on Visioning

While myregion.org is championing regionalism and how we grow as a region, Orange County is taking stock and moving on several visioning projects that will change the way the county is developed in the future.  Orange County is taking a holistic approach with the series of Community Challenges Forums, and is also focusing on sector long-range planning by hosting several visioning workshops for the Avalon South/Innovation Way Corridor.

On August 24, 2005, a group of Orange County citizens, business leaders and elected officials came together for the final session of a year-long Community Challenge Forums series that focused on future growth of the county. The series was facilitated by the UCF Florida Institute of Government.

Participants at the final session worked on strengthening and revising the recommendations that had emerged during earlier forums that focused specifically on civic leadership, transportation, smart growth and the environment.

The recommendations dealt with transportation issues and how they relate to connectivity and balance, the natural and built environment issues and how they relate to Orange County’s community support for choices and aesthetics, the educational process and funding options.  Finally, the forum revised the recommendations for Orange County’s Community Vision to be inclusive and to be creative in seeking opportunities for intergovernmental cooperation and coordination from state, regional and local agencies.

In a more micro or sector planning perspective, Orange County Government facilitated several visioning workshops for the Avalon South/Innovation Way Corridor in July and August.  The workshops focused on the southeast area of Orange County through UCF and the Airport, connected by the Alafaya Trail roadway.

The purpose of the workshops was to identify areas where growth may occur, determine the appropriate environmental controls and ensure that the high-value jobs and high–tech industries are encouraged for sustainable economic development.  A town hall visioning workshop is planned for September 15, 2005, at Timber Creek High School, and on October 27 & 29, a Community Planning Collaborative Summit will be held at the Sheraton World Resort to conclude the Innovation Way visioning process.

Orange County’s visioning projects are touching a community nerve about how we grow and develop in the county and the extraordinary need for regionalism in Central Florida.  myregion.org is leading the way for regionalism in Central Florida, and examples of communities such as Orange County doing their part in planning and visioning are required to ensure that we successfully grow in future.
