Central Florida Agencies Provide Assistance To Hurricane Victims

Indicative of what is being done throughout the entire United States, agencies here in Central Florida are stepping forward to provide assistance to those affected by Hurricane Katrina. Whether you are a local resident wishing to make donations to the relief effort or someone affected by the disaster, local agencies are prepared to offer assistance.

Below are some of the efforts being conducted here in Central Florida:

WORKFORCE CENTRAL FLORIDA:
WORKFORCE CENTRAL FLORIDA and its ONE-STOP CAREER CENTERS are assisting Hurricane Katrina evacuees by connecting them with:
- Assistance with job placement for temporary & permanent employment inCentral Florida (job leads, resume assistance, etc.)
- Connection to other community services through United Way's 211service and other community partners

WCF's ONE-STOP CAREER CENTERS: 1-800-757-4598 or www.WorkforceCentralFlorida.com to find the closest location

HEART OF FLORIDA UNITED WAY:
United Way of America has established a Hurricane Katrina Response Fund. The Heart of Florida United Way has assumed a lead role in the local communities response. They have access to national funds to assist with displaced citizens arriving in the area. A team of emergency response agencies, along with mental health providers, Workforce Central Florida and the Department of Children and Families has been assembled.

The local 2-1-1 service is also filling an important role in the efforts, providing backup to 2-1-1 of Louisiana while also giving technical and staff support. 2-1-1 is the central point for service needs, as well as directing offers of assistance.

More information is available on the Heart of Florida United Way web site at www.hfuw.org.

AMERICAN RED CROSS OF CENTRAL FLORIDA:
The American Red Cross of Central Florida has also been actively involved in the relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina. A shelter has been opened at the Baptist Bible Camp in Groveland to accommodate 300 people and the Red Cross is preparing to provide housing for additional victims who come to Central Florida.
