Smart, quality growth of the region is a key priority identified by the leadership of myregion.org to ensure the region’s global competition while maintaining a high quality of life. A major initiative to support this priority was undertaken in the Fall of 2004, spearheaded by the University of Central Florida’s Metropolitan Center for Regional Studies, along with myregion.org, and other community partners.
The University of Pennsylvania Planning Department and, Internationally Renowned, Professor Jonathan Barnett are currently creating a Smart Growth Plan for the seven county Central Florida region for 2025 and 2050. They are receiving input from experts throughout the region as they look at current growth and development in the region.
The University of Pennsylvania research team conducted a whirl-wind seven-county bus tour on Sunday, March 6, 2005. The following morning, Monday, March 7, 2005 the students split into seven teams to further explore - by planes, helicopters, automobiles and airboats - the environment, development, transportation and economic centers of Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Seminole and Volusia counties. Community leaders from each of the counties generously shared their time, insight and expertise with the students to further aid their valuable research of the Central Florida region.
The students presented their initial findings to the myregion Board of Directors and others for initial reaction and response this past Tuesday at Harry P. Leu Gardens, before returning to the University of Pennsylvania to develop their final report that will be presented early June 2005. Stay tuned!
